If this move is successful, it lowers the target's Speed stat by three stages and prevents them from fleeing (if wild) or switching out (if a trainer battle). This latter effect ends if the user faints or switches out, even via Baton Pass, or if the affected target faints. The trapped target can still be switched out/made to flee if struck by a phazing move such as Roar or Dragon Tail , and can themselves escape if they are holding a Smoke Ball or have the Run_Away Ability (wild battle only), and switch out if they are holding a Shed Shell, Eject Button, or use the moves U-Turn, Volt Switch or Baton Pass (note that the trapped effect is not passed on by Baton Pass anymore).

In a triple battle, this move may target anyone facing or adjacent to the user.
